A gem of a Dua

Image
It is a human trait to think or claim we are doing something right when actually we are causing harm. This trait is found at every level and in every sphere of life, be it personal/ego, family/relations, work/colleagues, social/other relationships, governmental/policies etc... Just think of the last time you were thinking you were being well founded in doing something in all fairness, only to realize sooner or later that what you had intended had become the source of much harm to yourself and/or to others? Well, Muslims, or rather people thinking and/or claiming to act in accordance with Islam, are human beings too with their strengths and weaknesses. The following short video is the commentary of a sign in the Quran (Aya) for Muslims to seek God's help against the effects of this negative human tendency. Let us make Dua i.e. ask Him too, the all Mighty & all Wise to guide us to the principal of "removal of harm BEFORE bringing of good" and to forgive o...

When Islam said 'NO' to FGM    In the 7th century AD among other aspects of his mission, the prophet of Islam came as a champion of women's Rights.  During his time and that of the first few generations of his followers, women went from being object of inheritance to becoming inheritors; from being buried alive at birth to choosing to say 'No' to a marriage proposal and to disposing freely of their wealth; from not having a voice to becoming teachers, advocates and strategic counselors.   Quite a revolution! One that many, essentially misogynous men, could not and would not accept. Therefore since the death of the Prophet of Islam, corrupters of Islam have been at work to alienate women again and subjugate them to their former lower condition. FGM  -female genital mutilation- features amongst the biased beliefs and practices that reemerged after the advent of Islam & of female Rights.  This atrocious practice had indeed been in place hun...

The gem of contentment

Image
Virtue of RiDaa Cure for a troubled heart and a community in crisis . In a serene courtyard of a madressah in Northern New Mexico, Abdal Hakim Murad sits down for an informal address on the topic of having peace and contentment with the decree of Allah. He reflects upon his experiences of the ummah over the years and describes how it became apparent that Muslims in modern times are neglecting this traditional virtue of riDaa. He further explains how the absence of contentment in one's life can lead to serious defects such as self-righteousness, anger and suspicion of others. The more widespread effects of such a void are lack of direction and unity at the collective level and a dented credibility on the world stage. This shrewd observation serves as a great ...

Amazing!

High and exalted is AIIah (subhan AIIah), our heart beats around 100,00 times a day! Our blood is on a 60,000-mile journey. Our eyes can distinguish up to one million colour surfaces and take in more information than the largest telescope known to man. Our lungs inhale over two million litres of air every day, without even thinking. They are large enough to cover a tennis court. Our hearing is so sensitive it can distinguish between hundreds of thousands of different sounds. Our sense of touch is more refined than any device ever created. Our brain is more complex than the most powerful computer and has over 100 billion nerve cells. We give birth to 100 billion red cells every day. When we touch something, we send a message to our brain at 124 mph. We have over 600 muscles. We exercise at least 30 muscles when we smile. We are about 70 percent water. We make one liter of saliva a day. Our nose is our personal air-conditioning system: It warms cold air, cools hot air and fi...

The Gossip!

A person repeated a bit of gossip about a neighbor. Within a few days the whole community knew the story. The person it concerned was deeply hurt and offended. Later the person responsible for spreading the rumor learned that it was completely untrue!!! The person was very sorry... And went to a wise old man to get some advice and find out what could be done to repair the damage! "Go to the marketplace, " said the wise man, "and purchase chicken feathers. Then on your way home drop them one by one along the road." Although surprised by this piece of advice, the person did whathe was told. The next day the wise man said, "Now go and collect all the feathers you dropped yesterday and bring them back to me." The person followed the same road, but unfortunately, the wind had blown the feathers away. After searching for hours; returned with only one feather! "You see,"said the old man,"it's easy to drop them, but it's...
